A three year old girl looks into her fathers bowl.
Little Girl: “Did you like this?”
Dad: “Yeah”
Little Girl:”Good. Because I had some too.”
When I heard this little snip ask her father about whatever-it-was they’d eaten- it got me thinking.
Why did she ask that
I might have asked the same for some logical reason. Maybe it tasted funny or I just wondered if the person liked that particular thing. The little girl had a pensive thoughtful look on her face.
My cursory thought was that she hadn’t liked it and wondered if it was safe. After all, safty is everyones goal right? She’s no doubt watching the news. Everyone needs healthcare; everyone needs a bailout. We need to minimize casualties and aid refugees and victims.
Safety. It’s the ubiquitous buzzword; that’s so common no one calls it a buzzword.
As I write down my Coffee Quote of the day. I think on the little girls face. She wasn’t worried that she ate something poisonous. Nor did she seem terribly put out by the flavour or olofactory sensations the food bestowed. She walked away tall.
She just wanted to make sure Dad had eaten the same thing and if it fit the mold. She was confirming her identity. Someone with more power than me thought this was a reasonable meal.
“Good. Because I ate some too”
My identity is confirmed.
Where do I get my identity?
It’s a rye thought sitting her at Starbucks. I’m drinking coffee here even though I can get a carafe of- just as good or better- coffee that adds to my identity. Sitting with people of a certain caste. I’ve bought a bit of my identity.
Today I’m hearing people in a new light. They come in to get coffee and they talk about their healthcare, their casualties, their bailouts, and their victims. And what those with more power than they have are saying about it.
Unlike the little girl of three or so, I can choose to an extent where I get my identity. Who feeds me. Who has power in my life. In America I can choose who my boss is, to what religion I subscribe, and whom to vote for.
Today is a day to change who you sit next to and say:
“Did you like this? Good. Because I’m gona have some too.”
And walk away tall.
